Get outdoors and make it out alive!

Over the river and through the woods…

Over the river and through the woods…

It’s that time of year again; shorter, colder, wetter days, dreams of hibernation…Comforting smells from the kitchen, warm laughs and some time to catch up with our friends and family. Many of us will get together to celebrate Thanksgiving, which should be a time of reflecting on those things we are thankful for and maybe less on the historical inaccuracies of how the holiday started. The time between Thanksgiving and Christmas often brings an onslaught of spending to show our love and appreciation for one another and of course a lot of this shopping is done on Black Friday, the shopping “sale” extravaganza day of the year.

Every time I go outside I feel the nature within me, feeding my soul like a depraved baby bird, while a cat lurking around the corner to eat me

REI started a campaign a few years ago to #optoutside. REI closes their doors on the biggest shopping day of the year and allows their staff to spend time with their loved ones and encourages them to head outdoors, instead of shopping or working. We embrace this idea! While we love getting gifts for our loved ones as much as the next person, we want to do so in a meaningful way. If you aren’t ready to make a commitment to step away from the shopping explosion that follow Thanksgiving, consider getting people experience based gifts. This can be something as simple as movie tickets to your historical theater, dinner to a great sustainable local restaurant or a gift of learning, such as pottery, singing lessons (yes, I am taking donations), or salsa dancing!
